Hidden Hills stands near an important historical site in Florida. In 1562 Frenchman Jean Ribault landed here near the mouth of the adjacent St. Johns River where he built a stone monument. The stone column, next door to Hidden Hills, provides a panoramic view of the river; on a sunny afternoon you can see the Atlantic Ocean and the Mayport Naval Station, five miles to the east.
Then in 1564, a settlement of 200 French soldiers and artisans built Fort Caroline. The settlement lasted only a year.
Spain sent their own soldiers to Florida where they established a base at St. Augustine. The Spanish later wiped out the French soldiers and settlement. But today Fort Caroline National Memorial marks the spot where the French fort once stood.
